Nanban Movie review

Nanban is a remake of blockbuster hindi Comedy Entertainer 3 idiots starring Ilaya thalapathi Vijay, Jeeva and Srikanth. The Director of Nanban is none other than the Highest Paid Film Maker in India, Shankar. He holds the credit of Directing Megahit Superstar Rajnikanth Starrer Enthiran. Shankar is known for originality and ofcourse making a social Message driven movies. This time around, he has taken a different route, a Remake. Again, he has chosen to remake a movie which is not just a comedy entertainer but a movie which delivers a strong message to the youth.

Nanban is a scene to scene remake of 3 Idiots. What more to say. Story as everyone knows, is of Three college students who have different career aspirations but forced to do something their parents wants them to( Engineering). One amoung the three is a person who motivates them to pursue their career aspirations and not follow something forcefully. In between these gyan sessions we get to see a lot of humourous face off between these three friends and their dull dreaded professor Virus.

Ilayathalapathi Vijay finally gets to work with a director every lead artist wishes to. Vijay managed to find the road to success with Velayudham after a series of flops, including his 50th Movie Sura. This movie is another feather in his cap, a big feather rather. He has done total justice to the role and has not let the audience crib about his performance. A good replacement for Amir Khan in its Tamil Version. Job Well done!

Jiiva has taken the role of Sharmaan joshi. He has done a wonderful job in the humour bit with his trademark local tamil dialogue delivery but lacked to generate that centimental touch in which Sharmaan excelled in 3 idiots. Especially the scene where he attends the job interview. Sharmaan was Excellent and even managed to fill the viewer's eyes with tears. Otherwise, Jiiva was good.

Srikanth of Roja Kootam fame has taken the role of Madhavan (from original), an Aspiring wildlife photgrapher. Madhavan was initially approached to do this role, but he denied and the role eventually passed over to Srikanth. He has sensibly carried his character and has done a good job overall which includes Narration of the story.

Satyaraj as Virus (Virumandi Sandhanam). Virus according to the story is a shrewd, emotionless, strict professor and head of India's best Engineering college. Boman Irani with his Dialogue delivery, facial expressions, and portrayal of a Shrewd character was excellent. Satyaraj did look like a college professor but reminds you more of  "Poovu" character in his directorial Villadhi Villian way back in 1995. Shankar could have worked more on Satyaraj's get up in the movie.

Ileana's share on screen may not be much, but she has matched the performance of kareena from the original. Especially her conversation with Vijay when she gets drunk was an exact replica of the original with no flaws. Apart from her irritating broken tamil, Ileana was a smart choice.

Sathyan Sivakumar as silencer is indeed a very good pick. He may not have had that language accent of Chatur Ramalingam which added that extra bit of humour to Silencer's character in 3 idiots, but his speech on college fest matched the one by Chatur perfectly well and his dialogue delivery (mix of kovai tamil) is surely laughable.

Harris jayaraj's music has failed to impress and no tracks stay in your heart. "Give me some sunshine" and "Zubie Doobie" are still being enjoyed everywhere.

Shankar, by giving us an exact replica has proved that a beautiful story should be delivered the way it was in the original. He has not spoilt the storyline by adding any new scenes to it. Only an extra song, which is fitted well into the story. Songs with Attractive and colorful Costumes, beautiful locations and extravagant sets is trademark Shankar style. In Nanban, Shankar has Managed to custom paint a train. (Remember the trucks and roads in Andangaaka song from Anniyan?).

Overall, the movie has got all the qualities to be a Superhit. Go Watch it!

Rating : 3.5 out of 5

  1. Just to stress a bit, Satyaraj was a decent pick, but i some how feel there is no one else but Bomman who could have done this role better. I definitely need to disagree to the Poovu character mentioned above. You also need to look at it from the standpoint of how a Principal in Tamilnadu based engineering college behaves -- on those lines i suppose full credit to Satyaraj.

Illena's role -- okay, i still feel Shankars choice on this one was not right.

Vijay -- Has done this role out of his skin, the regular un-natural acting was not there, definitely a bonus

Jiva -- Great performance, but emotions were a let down.

Srikanth --????? -- Madhavan's presence was felt through out the movie in 3 Idiots -- i felt he was rather silent.

Overall there was loads of freshness--most of them have acted out of their ordinary self -- Good job to shankar and the team
