Rajapattai - Movie Review

This will be the last release of Kollywood this year. The movie has Vikram in lead with Deeksha Seth as his love interest. The director of this movie is Susindran. He is well known for directing offbeat hit movies like Azhagar samiyin kuthirai and Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu. Music and Background Score has been composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja.

Anal Murugan (Vikram) is a stunt artist whose Ambition is to become a leading Villian in Cinema. He Sings, dances, clads colourful costumes like a hero but wants to become a Villian. He encounters an incident where there is an Attempt to kill an elderly man Dakshinamurthy (Kasinadhuni Viswanath), Murugan saves him and gets to know that the attempt was by a politician (Sana) to grab his land where Dakshinamurthy runs an Orphanage and Murugan offers him refuge. The old man distrusts Murugan thinking he has been sheltered for his property and ends up getting cheated by his own son (working for the politician) and loses his land. Murugan, uses his muscle and man power to get the land back to the Elderly man and inturn many innocent people who have lost it.

National Award winner Chiyaan Vikram who has been doing roles which involves immense acting skills has chosen to do a Mass entertainer and flex his muscles a bit. He Does look like a Stunt man in this movie. He appears in 8 different looks for a single song and 17 different looks the entire movie. This is not new to vikram. He has worked on Mass entertainers like Bheema, Saamy,  Dhool and Arul. After doing difficult roles, Choosing to do a Mass entertainer in between and romance a pretty lass  is common amoung Kollywood Stars. Ofcourse, everyone needs a change and show their skills in all Departments. But, Vikram, Its now difficult for the audience to see you that way. Stick to roles like you played in Anniyan, pitamagan and Deiva Thirumagal and Saamy. You are the best and unbeatable in it. Even Roles like in Arul is acceptable.

Deeksha Seth, comes in and goes out unnoticed. At times, you feel, was she really needed in this movie. A Stunt man does not necessarily need a college going bubbly girlfriend who just falls for him with hero's unusual minimal effort to gain her interest. Hard to Judge her acting skills with this movie. Hardly has a dialogue to speak. Lets see how she fares in Vettai Mannan (2012) with Simbu.

Suseendran directing a commercial entertainer after Naan Mahan Alla, comes up with this one. Not bad but he could have given us something better. Commercial entertainers needs some punch and catchy Dialogues, movies like the ones of Director Hari (Saamy, Singham, and Tamizh). Something more racey and that keeps audience on their toes.

Director Suseendran

Yuvan Shankar Raja's music is bad except a single track Podipayyan Polave that stays in your heart. The song is accompanied by beautiful sets, and wonderful dance choreography by Shoby.

Podipayyan Polave Promo

Overall, Rajapattai scores 2.5 out 5. A typical movie where you walk in, empty your popcorn bucket and gulp down a mug of coke and walk out without even talking about it.

Hope, no one considers this for an award.

Don 2 Movie review

Don 2 - Movie Review

After a successful attempt in remaking the 1978 Blockbuster in 2006, Farhan Akthar started scripting a new story to continue the legacy of Don. A gangster, drug lord, smuggler whatever you may call. He wants to prove he is an undisputed King of underworld. It did not end there, Farhan Akhtar gave us a subtle twist in the tale and left audience gasping for more back in 2006. The movie named Don 2, "The King is Back" released to world audience on the 23rd December 2011. The caption in the title, might sound like a personal message by SRK to the film fraternity after a debacle in the form of Ra.One.

The Story

Don, after his successful escape in Malaysia from the hands of Interpol, Don now wants to enter the Europe and make it big. Here, instead of his regular smuggling and drug dealing, he resorts to Robbery. He plans to Rob Euro currency plates from a German Bank and start printing notes. He voluntarily surrenders to the Interpol and enters the prison in Malaysia in an attempt to escape with Vardhan who has the keys to a locker containing a video tape with which  he can blackmail the Vice President of the German Bank (an Indian.. after all we are everywhere) and get away with the currency plates. The Vice President instead gives him the access codes to the the vault where the currency plates are and Don hires a hacker to gain access to the security systems and subsequently escapes with the plates.

When you start watching the movie you will slowly start getting to know what's in store. The second half of the movie is very much predictable and you will be left to think if you are watching  Ocean's 11 or Mission Impossible. The movie has been shot in Malaysia, Zurich and berlin. Every scene of the movie has Don in it, if not, atleast, talking about him. Shahrukh Khan was at his best in the 1st part (Don 2006) and gave you a sense of feeling that, this is how a Don should be. He has carried the same attitude here too. He fits the bill well. The first half of the movie has all that you ask for. Jason West behind the camera has done a brilliant job. There is a guest appearance by Hrithik Roshan for a scene when Don has to get into a mask to avoid getting caught by the Interpol. Remember Mission Impossible?

The movie has got all the Grandeurs that a Gangster movie should possess. Location, Costumes, cars, Bikes and ofcourse the Dialogues. I must Say, Farhan Akhtar has made no mistake in choosing dialogues for Shahrukh and one liners are punching.

The second half of the movie, after the robbery, gets a little filmy. Don helps the cops to nab Vardhan (for immunity in return )who he leaves inside the bank after he successfully escapes underwater. That was his plan anyway. Interpol who were looking for a notorious underworld kingpin Don for the last 5 years take his help to capture Vardhan inside the bank building who could have been nabbed even otherwise. That was hard to digest.

Also, Don flirts with Roma every chance he gets to meet or speak to her. Its funny and nice but after a while it gets boring.

Don, even plots the police drama. This is something which i could not accept. The only reason he does is to get a clean chit. An international criminal gets immunity with just one selfish act.(helps cops Nab Vardhan, his rival).

Don is now a free bird with no charges against him (immunity.. remember??) and ready to enter a new country. Oh yes, he still has the Currency plates which he sneaked out in a courier box. The Movie ends clearly giving us a message about its sequel.

Verdict : Predictable. Scores 3/5. Average movie.
