"Osthe" The Mass!, This Movie is a Silambarasan T Rajendar (STR) starrer and a remake of Hindi film Dabangg starring Salman Khan. The movie is about a police Inspector Osthe Velan from Kaatukuppam fighting against a local goon Boxer Daniel whose is very ambitious about winning local by-elections. One of his means is Cash for votes which is foiled by Velan, infuriates him to kill the Inspector. While this plotting is going on, Richa Gangopadhyay (neduvali) daughter of a drunkard comes in as STR's love interest ofcourse to add some spice and On the other hand, Velan's family is headed by his step father (Nasser) whom he hates and he has useless Step brother (Jithan Ramesh) who is just behind marrying his love interest. The only person who he loves head to toe is his mother {and ofcourse Richa for what she's got :-)}. An ordinary Story with no great twists and turns and a very predictable end. The Hindi version was supported by its strong screenplay and character portrayal. Salman Khan had done justice to his role and Sonakshi Sinha subtly won the audience heart.
How did Osthe fare?
STR has tried very hard to mix Nellai Tamil and deliver it like Vijay in pokkiri which is very artificial. He lacks originality and has heavily tried to impersonate Salman Khan and failed Miserably. After being in Film industry for so long and having earned accolades in Vinnai thandi varuvaya and critical responses in Vaanam, this was least expected from STR. Looks like he is back to his old ways of ridiculous dancing and trying to add some punch to his dialogues delivery making it even more horrifying to watch and digest.
Richa Gangopadhyay, she has no say in this movie unlike her strong center stage character in Mayakkam Enna. She just vanishes from people's mind the moment her onscreen appearance is over. This was not the same with Sonakshi Sinha who still ignites the screen though she had similar screen sharing with Salman in Dabangg.
Santhanam plays constable in Velan's team and continous with his hilarous one liners and comparisons. He is a treat to watch.
Jithan Ramesh, who has not had a successful stinct in Tamil Industry has done a decent job as STR's younger brother (though he is approx 5 years elder to STR). He has been protrayed as a comedy piece and fits the bill well.
I guess there are a lot of Antogonist role players in Tamil Industry than choosing one from Bollywood. Sonu Sood has done a good job but he speaking Nellai Tamil makes you giggle.
Mallika Sherawat indeed sets the screen on fire. Not sure why lyrics changed from Zarda beda to Bombay Alva. May be Zarda beda is a censored word! but this is no match to Munni in Dabangg.
Revathi, Nasser and rest of the character roles have done a good job.
Thaman's scores typical music for a mass Entertainer.
Dharani, known for delivering hit projects like Gilli and Dhool has not done his homework well when it comes to character portrayal. After seeing Vikram's subtle but strong performance in Saamy and Surya's terrific performance in Kakka kakka and singham, Tamil fans have a high expectations from stars playing cop's role. Both Vikram's and Suriya's characters were totally controlled by the director. Dharani could have done the same and not let STR loose. Dharani has no control over Osthe Velan's character and it looks like STR has totally crafted his role and his deliverables.
Silambarasan's costumes does not portray an Inspector from village but a College Student who wears a stolen Police Uniform now and then.
Osthe - STR's acting = A masala entertainer and a movie to just kill time.
Verdict : 2/5
